In 1953, at the foot of lofty Gele Mountain and by the torrential Jiangling River, the cradle of the statesman and jurists—Southwest College of Political Science and Law was established. The grandness of the mountain and incessant flow of the water breed the national renown higher education institution.

 

      The ever-lasting vitality of the University exists in its tradition and spirit that formed in the history of its development rather than the replacement of its leaders or the renewal of construction on the campus. It is the internalization of the culture and becomes stronger as time goes on. Though rooted in reality, it surpasses time and place. Though inherited from the older generation, it develops with time.

 

      SWUPL won its unique position in Chinese academic circles through more than 50 years of humanistic culture and academic exploration. Since the 1950s, SWUPL has endured great hardships in its pioneer work, is assiduous in practice and initiates and enriches the spirit of SWUPL. This spirit contains patriotism, an ever self-strengthening spirit of struggle, group awareness, and a realistic attitude that is strict and down-to-earth, inspiring each student and faculty member to face bravely the challenge of our age. This tradition and spirit of SWUPL, which bears the past, present and future, is embodied in a collision of different points of view in the classroom, vigorous debate among scholars on a variety of subjects, and hard work from alumni all over China.

 

      New century, new beginning. Depending on its more than 50 years of humanistic accumulation and 100,000 alumni’s group efforts and following the school motto “ to learn widely, to act sincerely, to stress morality as well as law”, SWUPL acts timely and strives to make more great accomplishments in the 21st century and steps toward a glorious tomorrow.
